Durham Region launches Durham Greener Buildings

The initiative was launched in partnership with Windfall Centre

On January, 24, 2024, the Regional Municipality of Durham, in partnership with Windfall Ecology Centre, launched the Durham Greener Buildings Program, a groundbreaking benchmarking and disclosure program that will support building owners participating in the provincial Energy and Water Reporting Benchmarking (EWRB) program by helping them to measure, report and take action on efficiency and conservation opportunities.

Climate change will add more than $4B infrastructure cost

Ontario's financial watchdog says the dangers of a changing climate could add more than $4 billion per year to the cost of maintaining public infrastructure in the province. But the Financial Accountability Office says provincial and municipal governments can cut those costs by quickly making roads, hospitals, schools and stormwater pipes more resilient to extreme heat and rainfall.

New satellite will detect and share CO2 data from facilities

Canadian emissions monitoring company GHGSat last weekend launched a satellite aimed at detecting carbon dioxide emissions from individual facilities like coal plants and steel mills from space for the first time.

Environment Minister, Steven Guilbeault speaking at a forum on sustainable finance in Ottawa last week, warned that Canada is falling behind global competitors in the race to attract the investment needed to fuel the transition to a net-zero economy.

Business leaders increasingly see value of climate plans

A new survey finds Canadian business leaders increasingly see climate change plans as good for their bottom line. The survey commissioned by BMO of 700 small and medium business leaders in Canada and the U.S. found that 62 per cent of those north of the border see a climate change plan as good for business, up from 47 per cent in the survey last year.

Toronto net-zero strategy for existing buildings released

The report now heads to city council

The City of Toronto has released its much anticipated net-zero policy strategy for existing buildings. The comprehensive report was 18 months in the making by an expert team from Windfall Ecology Centre, the Integral Group, WSP, and Reep Green Solutions. It lays out an ambitious policy framework and pathways to net-zero for all buildings in Toronto by 2050.
