Heritage Retrofits - Preserve and Conserve
A New Model for Heritage Retrofits
Conserve & Preserve
Windfall Centre is conducting an energy efficiency retrofit on a heritage building, while respecting the cultural integrity of the structure. To date we have documented our experience and created a New Model and Guidebook for future use by heritage homeowners and operators. Through our efforts, we are giving new life and a new future to our heritage homes.
Retrofit Design Studios
In February 2009, Windfall Centre held a series of three Design Studios at various heritage buildings in Northern York Region. Participants co-created a new model for heritage retrofits by utilizing their range of expertise and personal experience.
As a result of their collaborative effort, a Guidebook was created that explains and works through the New Model with practical guidance and tips for those who manage and/or own heritage buildings.
Follow our Heritage Retrofit
Windfall Centre is sharing our experience in retrofitting our heritage home. We invite you to follow along as we address heat loss and high energy costs by implementing draft proofing materials and insulation. In additon, we are exploring renewable energy alternatives, including solar and geothermal opportunities.
Our Model: The Sheppard House
Windfall Centre is located in the Sheppard House, a circa-1920s house, in Aurora, Ontario, Canada. In 1972, the home and surrounding property was donated to the Ontario Heritage Trust, which manages it along with the Town of Aurora and the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority.
Resources and Guidebook
As part of our research, Windfall Centre has compiled a series of documents to guide us in the retrofit of the Sheppard House. We welcome all heritage homeowners and operators to use these documents during the retrofit of their buildings.
