- Purchase a new ENERGY STAR® - qualified model which are at least 10% more efficient than the minimum federal efficiency standards.
- Avoid overfilling the refrigerator, as this blocks air circulation.
- Freezers work best when they are full – use empty boxes to take up space.
- Check the seal on your fridge door. Close the door on a $5 bill. If it holds tightly the seal is good; if not, adjust the door or replace the seal.
- Clean the refrigerator coils (in the back) and the air intake grill (on the front below the doors) every 3 months.
- Keep refrigerators and freezers out of direct sunlight, and allow at least 5cm all around to allow heat to escape from the compressor and condensing coil.
