Refrigerator Energy Saving Tips

Because the fridge is always in use, it is one of the highest energy using appliances in the home

  • Get rid of the old inefficient fridge in the basement. Old inefficient refrigerators can cost up to $150 or more per year to run. To get rid of your old fridge you can contact The Great Refrigerator Roundup
  • Purchase a new ENERGY STAR® - qualified model which are at least 10% more efficient than the minimum federal efficiency standards.
  • Avoid overfilling the refrigerator, as this blocks air circulation.
  • Freezers work best when they are full – use empty boxes to take up space.
  • Check the seal on your fridge door. Close the door on a $5 bill. If it holds tightly the seal is good; if not, adjust the door or replace the seal.
  • Clean the refrigerator coils (in the back) and the air intake grill (on the front below the doors) every 3 months.
  • Keep refrigerators and freezers out of direct sunlight, and allow at least 5cm all around to allow heat to escape from the compressor and condensing coil.
